A morbidly fascinating and articulate collection of essays, this book explores the grim underside of America's cult of the automobile and the disturbing, frequently conspiratorial, speculations that arise whenever the car becomes the cause or the site of human death. Through analysis of fatal celebrity car accidents and other examples of death by automobile, as well as through personal memoir and forensic reports, cultural critics ponder our very human fascination with the car crash. Topics include the roles and experiences of passengers and bystanders, car crash conspiracy theories, the automobile as a site of murder, studies of car crash cinema, and psychological interpretations of the notion of the 'accident.' The book features original essays by such underground icons as Kenneth Anger and Adam Parfrey....

In the aftermath of a traumatic event, a young man navigates small-town gossip, grief and recovery amidst a culture of toxic masculinity. “A heart-soaring act of literary bravery,” Car Crash is a hopeful, raw coming-of-age story for our times (Trent Dalton). “Bruisingly insightful.”—The Guardian • “Delivers from the first arresting page.”—Inside Story • “Moving, lyrical, warmly told and very funny.”—Brooke Davis, author of Lost & Found • “Shines with a fierce intelligence.”—Kristina Olsson, author of Shell Why did he get to live, and not them? This question has plagued Lech Blaine ever since he was a teenager, when he got into a car that never arrived at its destination. Of his crew of friends who were in the car, Blaine was the only passenger who made it out unscathed. In the aftermath of the accident that sent shockwaves through his small town, Blain was thrust into the local spotlight, fielding questions from journalists, police, and feeling pressure to perform his grief in public and on social media. In a community where men were expected to be strong and silent, Blaine felt that he had no one to turn to with his complicated emotions. In Car Crash, Blaine offers an intimate, brave account of what it’s like to survive a tragedy that others didn’t––and a moving portrait of a young person struggling to define his own masculinity. Blaine was raised to believe that being masculine meant projecting toughness, stoicism, and dominance, and this belief leads him to alcohol and disordered eating to cope with his pain. But as Blaine finally learns to open up with family, friends, and a therapist, he comes to realize the meaning of true strength, and the power of vulnerability to bring hope and healing. “Some books just have to be written. And some books just have to be read.”—Trent Dalton, author of Boy Swallows Universe...

In this hallucinatory novel, an automobile provides the hellish tableau in which Vaughan, a "TV scientist" turned "nightmare angel of the highways," experiments with erotic atrocities among auto crash victims, each more sinister than the last. James Ballard, his friend and fellow obsessive, tells the story of this twisted visionary as he careens rapidly toward his own demise in an internationally orchestrated car crash with Elizabeth Taylor. A classic work of cutting-edge fiction, Crash explores both the disturbing implications and horrific possibilities of contemporary society's increasing dependence on technology as intermediary in human relations....

The World Health Organization recognizes that motor vehicle crashes and their impacts have become a serious public health crisis, with injury rates expected to escalate globally over the next 30 years. This is not surprising as adversity associated with the traumatic experience of a motor vehicle crash in which one could have died can be overwhelming. The risk of developing a major psychological disorder like depression and/or post-traumatic stress disorder is high, and distress will become substantially intensified if one also sustains physical injury, which can range from a mild injury such as soft tissue damage or concussion, to a severe injury such as spinal cord injury or severe traumatic brain injury. However, the degree of injury severity does not predict the degree of distress and adversity experienced very well. Evidence also suggests that entering a compensation process as a result of injuries can add to the distress experienced. Adversity can include personal suffering (e.g., pain, disability, trauma), financial hardship (e.g., loss of income/employment), social isolation, relationship stress, and a possible extended involvement in an adversarial claims/medical process. Adversity after the Crash: The Physical, Psychological and Social Burden of Motor Vehicle Crashes is the first scholarly book for some time to address a broad range of issues arising from a motor vehicle crash, and the authors are all internationally recognised experts in their respective fields. The book contains four sections, in which topics like types of physical injuries most commonly suffered, epidemiology, economic outcomes, return to work, compensation factors, whiplash, mental health outcomes, pain management, as well as innovative interventions designed to decrease the burden associated with motor vehicle crashes are discussed. This book is a must-read for people involved in researching motor vehicle crash outcomes and recovery, as well as for those providing clinical services to people who have been involved in a motor vehicle crash. Survivors of a motor vehicle crash would also benefit from a clearer understanding of the dynamics involved in recovering from such a traumatic experience....

A rainy night. A car crash. After the accident Sarah moves to a new school. A new place where no one knows what happened to her or her brother, where she doesn't have to deal with the history that's pulling the rest of her family apart. Will is keeping his head down at home, just trying to get by. Then his sister Lauren comes back, as caustic as always but somehow changed. Will doesn't know what upheaval brought her home. But it's sparking some serious change in his life too. Eliat's got no mother of her own, and she's way too young to be one. Looking after a two-year-old, trying to finish school. Sometimes all that keeps her sane is partying as hard and fast as she can. Now the pressure's building and Eliat just wants to get away. Just get into a car and drive. In this impressive and beautifully written debut, Kate Hendrick sets the butterfly effect in motion. The moving stories of three teenagers going through crucial changes show how random actions acquire significance. How one pivotal moment could transform your life and you might never know; how what you do matters. Kate Hendrick is a high school teacher and creative jack-of-all trades, with interests in art, design, photography, writing and anything DIY, especially if it involved power tools. She and her husband live in Sydney with their young daughter. The Accident is her first novel. 'A thoughtful, philosophical novel for teens interested in or dealing with the aftereffects of trauma.' Kirkus 'For me, it brought back the raw sting of familiarity of reading John Marsden for the first time. Like Marsden, Hendrick's writing shows that sometimes families can let us down. Her vulnerable characters voice our secrets, remind us we are not alone and offer a light at the end of the tunnel.' Australian Bookseller and Publisher 'I was riveted. The characters show vulnerability and emotions true to their age...The Accident was written extremely well...It is a book which evokes a lot of emotions and curiosity.' Obsession with Book blog 'A lovely debut.' YA Midnight Reads blog 'The story swells with promise and hope, and there were some really touching, serious, heartbreaking moments...The Accident is a thought provoking story of life and how we can choose how we react to events, even if we cannot control what happens to us...The fact that this is a debut novel is all the more impressive to me and I hope it's not too early for me to start looking forward to Kate's next book. Rating: 5 stars.' Vegan YA Nerds 'Hendrick's prose is gorgeous, literary and emotive...Likewise, the dialogue is so authentic I felt like I was eavesdropping rather than reading fiction. The characters are flawed and vulnerable and wonderfully layered. Hendrick knows how to up the stakes, raise the tension and she is not kind to her characters (things are tough, things get tougher). They bleed onto the pages in such an intimate and unpretentious way it was impossible not to ache for them...[The Accident] is effortlessly compelling, quietly, sneakily, powerful...I am still thinking about it.'
