Book Review: Managing Business Ethics by Linda K. Trevino, Katherine A. Nelson
As a reviewer for “Managing Business Ethics” by Linda K. Trevino and Katherine A. Nelson, I was pleasantly surprised by the book’s depth and breadth of coverage on the topic of ethical decision-making.
The authors skillfully navigate the complexities of ethical dilemmas faced by businesses today, providing readers with a practical framework for making sound, ethical decisions. They discuss the importance of creating a culture of ethics within an organization, the role of leadership in shaping ethical behavior, and how to handle difficult situations when ethics are compromised.
One aspect that really resonated with me was the emphasis on individual responsibility in making ethical decisions. The authors stress that while organizations can create policies and guidelines around ethics, ultimately it is up to each individual to make the right choice based on their own moral compass.
The book also includes numerous real-world examples and case studies that illustrate how different organizations have handled ethical issues in various industries. This provides readers with valuable insights into how to identify potential ethical pitfalls and navigate them effectively.
Overall, “Managing Business Ethics” is a must-read for anyone interested in creating an ethical workplace culture or looking to improve their own decision-making skills. While it may not be the most thrilling read, it is certainly an important one for anyone concerned with doing business in a responsible and sustainable way.
My only criticism would be that at times the book can feel a bit dry or overly academic. However, this is a minor quibble given its overall usefulness as a guidebook for navigating complex ethical dilemmas within a business context.
In terms of score, I would give “Managing Business Ethics” 4 out of 5 stars for its comprehensive coverage and practical advice on ethics in business.

Description : When Business and Personal Values Collide “Defining moments” occur when managers face business decisions that trigger conflicts with their personal values. These moments test a person’s commitment to those values and ultimately shape their character. But these are also the decisions that can make or break a career. Is there a thoughtful, yet pragmatic, way to make the right choice? Bestselling author Joseph Badaracco shows how to approach these dilemmas using three case examples that, when taken together, represent the escalating responsibilities and personal tests managers face as they advance in their careers. The first story presents a young manager whose choice will affect him only as an individual; the second, a department head whose decision will influence his organization; the third, a corporate executive whose actions will have much larger, societal ramifications. To guide the decision-making process, the book draws on the insights of four philosophers—Aristotle, Machiavelli, Nietzsche, and James—who offer distinctly practical, rather than theoretical, advice. Defining Moments is the ultimate manager’s guide for resolving issues of conflicting responsibility in practical ways....
